Conference: Weltstadt – Who creates the city? // 05.3. 2014 // DAZ
On May 3rd the actors and experts from all ten WELTSTADT projects will come together for the first time at the WELTSTADT conference at the German Architecture Center (DAZ). The WELTSTADT conference aims at comparing different local solutions to global problems. Which initiatives and elements worked well in one context? What were the likely causes of success?
Can such elements and initiatives be replicated elsewhere? The conference will horizontally connect Weltstadt initiatives and their actors – from urban activists and theoreticians to local
administrators and urban planners. Rather than working with the traditional lecture format, the Weltstadt symposium will be structured around dialogue and group discussions. These will
develop along five key themes such as new civil society, the relation between formal and informal urban development, performative interventions and their potential to last, as well as the cross-links between traditional administration and new actors that challenge the status quo.
Speakers include Mitchell Joachim, Architect und Professor at New York University, Renato Cymbalista, Urbanist and Professor at University of São Paulo, the Architect V. Naresh Narasimhan from Bangalore, the Architect and Curator N’Goné Fall from Dakar/Paris and Maja Popović, Architect from Belgrade.
Weltstadt – Who creates the city? is curated by Matthias Böttger, Angelika Fitz and Tim Rieniets (until 2013).
WELTSTADT – Who creates the city? is an initiative by the Goethe-Instituts and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.
